Shane Kirshenblatt is working on a new project and he is looking for someone to share their personal experience with bullying in relation to homosexuality. He will then adapt their experience into a comic which he will distribute to schools to raise awareness. This is a great project and a portion of the profits will go to youth programs so if you or someone you know can help with it, please do. More details from Shane below.
As I work to complete the Anything Ghost Graphic novel, I am looking to plant the seeds for my next endeavor.
Given the significance of issues pertaining to homosexuality, specifically as it relates to bullying and tolerance in schools, I am looking to create a book which would be a true account of someone who has struggled with these issues personally (growing up, in school, with family), in order to provide perspective and understanding to those who have pre-conceived notions.
Currently, I have not yet chosen a person to base this book on, so I am opening this up to anyone who may be interested [in] being involved. My goal is to get this into schools and a significant portion of the profits will go to youth programs to support others who are currently struggling.
If you or anyone you know is interested in telling their story, please… email me at shanekirshenblatt (at) rogers.com. My current project is going to keep me busy through June but I’ll be ready to start work in July. Thanks and look forward to putting out something which will hopefully make a positive difference.
Reblogs are appreciated.
This showed up in the mail today along with the nicest letter I’ve ever received. I’m so overwhelmed and flustered and happy and filled with wonder at the surprising goodness of people. (Taken with instagram)
What an amazing sketch! That Craig Thompson!! :D
Guys, theVancouver Comic Arts Festival is only a bit over a week away!
VanCAF is actually being organized by my wife, Shannon, who was sick and tired of hearing me and my comics friends grouse about how there wasn’t a TCAF-styled free-to-attend comics festival in Vancouver. Fortunately for us all, she really stepped up to the plate, securing a really neat venue and filling it with an awesome slew of cartoonist exhibitors and guests, including:
Questionable Content’s Jeph Jacques
Dr. McNinja’s Chris Hastings
Tanpopo’s Camilla d’Errico
A Softer World’s Joey Comeau and Emily Horne
Wondermark’s David Malki
Boxerhockey’s Tyson Hesse
The Simpson’s Comic’s Nina Matsumodo
Dalen and Gole’s Mike Deas
Top Shelf Comics
Cloudscape
Tiny Kitten Teeth’s Frank Gibson and Becky Dreistadt
Wasted Talent’s Angela Melick
Tangles’ Sarah Leavitt
The Village’s Ken Boesem
Weregeek’s Alina Pete
Murderbook’s Ed Brisson
Filibuster’s J.J. McCullough
Family Man/Bite Me’s Dylan Meconis
Three Word Phrase’s Ryan Pequin
…and a ton of other talented old hands and new creators. (Oh, uh, and me too!) Check out the full list right here.
VanCAF is a non-profit show, and we don’t have a huge marketing budget, but I think with our awesome guest list and word of mouth we can make this thing a big success… so anything you can help do to spread the word would be super appreciated, be it tweeting, reblogging, sharing, or just shouting a lot! And if you’re coming, RSVP on Facebook to let us know! This thing is going to be awesome.
It’s great that TCAF has spawned a bunch of similar shows. If anybody is going to this, say “hi” to J.J. McCullough for me.
Ha ha ha! The artist who was selling the bottle openers was my friend, Shane Kirshenblatt! You can get them from BB Barfly.

Who else is going to be at TCAF on Saturday? I will be there from noonish to 5. To clarify, I am not on the exhibitor list. I’ll just be wandering around the library. I’ll be giving out free bookmarks and buttons though. I may also have a limited supply of books with me. Go to http://torontocomics.com for details.
I finally saw The Hunger Games and it was very good. Definitely one of the best adaptations I’ve seen. It had the same quality of looking exactly right as the Harry Potter movies do (aside from the casting of Haymitch who I saw as looking more like John C. Reiley, although Woody Harrelson was good). I hope Gary Ross will direct the next two films but if he doesn’t then I would like to see Neill Blomkamp or Gábor Csupó direct them.

Okay, so I got the official thumbs up from Kazoo Fest to serve free lemonade at my table. I wasn’t even going to ask at first because I didn’t think they would let me do it but there were these people selling lemonade at the One Of A Kind Show and I bought four bottles and here we are. So if you don’t come see me at Kazoo Fest you will be missing out on FREE lemonade among other things.
